Why does my cat kick litter out of the litter box?

Some common reasons as to why your kitty tends to go about the routine of kicking kitty litter EVERYWHERE and how to prevent it:

  1. Instinctive Behavior – Cats tend to react instinctively from generation to generation regardless of the cat breed. They have the natural instinct of burying their own feces and urine in an effort to eliminate it and to prevent any nasty odors from lingering in their litter box. You really can’t blame them on this one!
  2. Size Matters – Who would have thought it would be such a big deal in selecting a “bathroom” for your treasured cat! Well, size really does matter. Take into consideration the size of your cat when choosing a litter box and a cat litter mat as well. An average litter box may suffice for say a Siamese cat, but when you shop for a Maine Coon you will have to consider a bigger litter box and litter mat option. Oh and don’t forget about the kitten in the bunch she will require a much smaller box so that they escape from the confines of their bathroom.
  3. Bad Placement – Cats like to see what’s going on while they do their business. So, if you haven’t placed your kitty’s litter box in a quiet and accessible environment. They may attempt to bolt mid poop creating a scatter of litter and feces on the floor!
  4. Types of Litter – If your cat is OK with it try larger grained kitty litter to the preferred smaller grained clumping litter. This will help to minimize the amount of litter accumulated outside the box.
  5. Help Please! – Help your cat out by cleaning her litter on a regular basis, so that they don’t have to do a double back flip out of their bathroom stall!
  6. The Depth – Try and place between a 1.5 to 2 inches of cat litter in the bottom of the litter container. Don’t go nuts and put 5 lbs of litter into a box and think you won’t have to deal with it for a week. She is liable to leave you a nice surprise one day on your favorite carpet or bedspread!

Other Things to Consider:

  • Grooming – If you have a long-haired cat try and trim around their paws to help reduce the amount of kitty litter tracked outside of the box.
  • Training – If you own a kitten or just a stubborn cat that doesn’t want to do her business in a clean fashion. Then give them a helping hand! Try not to scold your cat for messy mistakes they make.
  • Access – Try to ensure your furry friend has adequate space and head clearance in and around their litter box space.

What is a Cat Litter Mat?

A Cat Litter Mat or Cat litter box mat is typically rectangular in shape and placed under your litter box. It acts as a catchment device to trap litter and prevent it from being transported onto the floor. These cat litter mats are usually made with soft rubber, PVC and silicone material. The cat mat pulls the litter away from kitty’s paws. They come in wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.

What to consider when choosing cat litter mats?

Here are some helpful tips on picking the right kitty tray mat for your favorite furry feline:

1. Size and Shape

Make certain you pick a cat litter mat that covers the base of your litter box with a few inches of overhang on all sides. This will provide adequate protection against litter scatter and other waste issues. Also consider a large enough kitty mat to cover more than one litter box, if you have more than one cat.

If you live in an apartment or condo where space is a luxury. Ensure that the kitty litter box mats will fit in the confined spaces required. Take proper measurements initially to avoid headaches down the road!

Cat litter mats found in the marketplace are rectangular in shape. However, there are some that even come in the shape of a paw if that suits your cat’s fancy! Sizes range from 14 inches by 20 inches for smaller cats right on up to 48 inches by 36 inches, if you have multiple kitty litter containment boxes.

2. Product Material

From comparing cat litter mat available online, you will see that the options tend to consist of:

  • hygienic FDA grade silicone
  • rubberized materials
  • easy clean materials such as PVC and EVA
  • and soft, thick and flexible grass-like fabrics

All the above materials are considered safe for your cat to use.

The best kitty litter mats are made with anti-slip traction features, guards around the rim to retain cat litter, and a few have side spouts to aid in removing the collected litter.

3. Durability and Texture

As pointed out above cat litter mats are made from silicone, rubberized materials, PVC and EVA. Each one has it’s pros and con’s to consider. The FDA grade silicone and rubberized cat mat may be softer on your kitty’s paws, but may not be as durable on option as PVC-based litter mats. The later maybe a better option if your cat leaves the litter box and has a tendency to dig their claws into the mat after rendering. Also, to be considered is how often your cat may poo or pee on the mat accidentally. The cat litter mat will require more cleaning and scrubbing with detergents that will wear on the surface of the cat mat over time. EVA and rubberized cat litter mats do a better job at locking in cat waste odors versus the PVC cat mats.  They also require less clean up maintenance which you will be happy with!

Texture can be a big feature consideration if you have a finicky cat. You want to choose a cat tray litter mat that will be soft on your cat’s paws but, doesn’t annoy them to the degree where they don’t use it. Or worse yet they begin to poo or pee in different areas of the house. Most cat litter tray mats have a fibrous surface layer, so you might want to test your kitty on a similar surface to see how they react to it.

Lots to consider, but at the end of the day, you want a cat litter mat that will meet both you and your cat’s needs.

Other features to consider:

  • Price – Most cat litter mats range in price from $10 to $50. This gives you lots of options given the budget you are working with.
  • Color – Most manufactured cat mats today come in a wide variety of colors that will blend in with your room surroundings.
  • Ease to Clean – Some materials and textures are easier to clean than others. This depends on your cat on how well you have your cat trained to defecate in the box. If your cat misses the target quite a bit. Then you will want to choose a litter mat that is durable enough to stand up to the abuse of frequent cleaning. Most standard mats can easily be cleaned with a simple vacuum cleaner.
